PPASS BC has recognized the benefits of water exercise programs for those who had polio and for those with Post Polio Syndrome. Water is a medium that supports one and allows exercise that meets the needs of the individual by regulating resistance in the water. The benefits of this form of exercise may be an increase in range of motion, better balance and increased strength.
Water exercise programs teach an individual what can be achieved through careful and non-fatiguing activity in a pool. Individuals must ascertain that the water at their chosen facility is warm enough for them to work in as those with post polio tend to be very cold sensitive.
An excellent manual titled "Guidelines for Establishing a Water Exercise Program for Post-Polio Participants" has been written by Lanny Taschuk and Patrick Fleck and is available through the PPASS office.
